What is COMSOL Multiphysics®?

The COMSOL Multiphysics® software is a general-purpose simulation software that provides fully coupled multiphysics and single-physics modelling capabilities. Innovators from all fields of engineering, manufacturing and scientific research use COMSOL Multiphysics® to simulate and optimise a variety of designs, devices and processes. A few recent examples of the software being used in real-world scenarios include how it is being used to investigate underground and subsea cable designs, study glacial ice loss and design a sand-based heat storage system.

Included in COMSOL Multiphysics® is the Model Builder, which provides all of the functionality needed for the modelling workflow —from defining definitions to postprocessing results— and the Application Builder, for building custom simulation applications based on developed models. These apps make simulation accessible to a larger audience because they can easily be used by simulation experts and those who are new to simulation software alike. Furthermore, the Model Manager, a workspace for efficiently organising simulation data, CAD files and experimental data, was introduced in the latest version of the software, version 6.0.

In addition, add-on modules that include specialised functionality for modelling electromagnetics, structural mechanics, acoustics, fluid flow, heat transfer and chemical engineering are available. They can be seamlessly connected to COMSOL Multiphysics® for a modelling workflow that remains the same regardless of your modelling scenario.

Why is modelling and simulation important?

By using simulation and modelling software in combination with experimental methods, you can speed up the time that it takes to optimise designs, devices and processes of interest without losing accuracy. Experimentally validated models will provide you with a convenient way to visualise and gain a deep understanding of the subjects of your analyses.

With COMSOL Multiphysics®, you will have complete control over all aspects of your model. Thanks to its functionality for coupling any number of physics phenomena together, you can be creative in a way that is sometimes impossible when using traditional approaches.

What areas of physics does COMSOL® cover?

COMSOL Multiphysics® can be paired seamlessly with add-on modules to provide specialised functionality for many areas of physics, including:

  • Electromagnetics
  • Structural mechanics
  • Acoustics
  • Fluid flow
  • Heat transfer
  • Chemical
