Two new series of TES moulded tantalum and TCH hermetically sealed SMD tantalum polymer hi-rel capacitors have been developed by AVX Corporation that are said to offer very low ESR, high capacitance and high voltage.

These are next generation devices for the company and offer an improved construction that allows the devices to be used for European aerospace applications with a subsequent significant payload reduction for power supplies

Manufactured in accordance with ESCC standards, the company’s new TES series SMD tantalum chip capacitors offer numerous downsizing options in combination with higher capacitance and lower ESR.

The devices have recently been EPPL2 listed according to the new ESCC specification ESCC3012/004. For E case sizes as per the ESCC specification a vertical multi-anode internal construction is being used to reduce the ESR down to 30mOhm. D case sizes use a ‘mirror’ multianode design with the benefit of Equivalent Series Inductance (ESL) reduced to half.

The TES series SMD tantalum chip capacitors are produced in the company’s European Space Agency (ESA) qualified manufacturing plant in Lanskroun, Czech Republic. Full QPL qualification is scheduled for the third quarter 2013.

The new TCH series hermetically sealed SMD tantalum chip capacitors with polymer electrode have been specifically developed in a project with ESA for mission critical systems with the need for large capacitance and low ESR. Tantalum polymer capacitor technology offers the benefits of much lower ESR values, lower derating and higher ripple current capabilities. However, its sensitivity to the combination of high temperature and humidity conditions has so far restricted its use in the aerospace industry.

By now placing the polymer capacitor into a hermetically sealed SMD case filled by an inert gas, a much improved stability has been achieved. The hermetical sealing suppresses humidity and oxidative degradations.

These hermetically sealed SMD tantalum chip capacitors benefit from a low ESR conductive polymer electrode, high capacitance values of up to 680µF and high voltage of up to 100V. This is claimed by the company to be the highest voltage currently available on the market for SMD tantalum polymer space grade capacitors.

Hermetic packaging using a ceramic case eliminates the impact of environmental conditions and offers excellent stability in humidity conditions and ambient atmosphere exposure.

The TCH series are available in two case sizes (I case: 11.8 x 6 x 2.6mm and 9 case: 11.8 x 12.5 x 5.8mm) and feature a very low weight of only 0.5g (I case) and 2.4g (9 case). The 9 case version is compatible to the CTC21D case size.
