Walsall-based container conversion specialist S Jones Containers is preparing to host a discussion at The Fire Safety Event at NEC Birmingham in April 2025 about the current lack of regulation surrounding the manufacture and storage of powerful lithium-ion batteries.
The panel style seminar will be hosted by Andrew Nicholls, Conversions General Manager at S Jones Containers during the three-day Fire Safety Event. The discussion will provide insight into the need for additional regulation governing the manufacture and storage of batteries in the UK. It will also focus on how manufacturers can protect staff and equipment during the development and testing phases. Once a lithium-ion battery like those used in used in e-bikes and EVs enters thermal runaway it can burn with intense heat for days so it’s crucial that they are stored and handled correctly to keep everyone safe.
Through its work over the last decade with several pioneering manufacturers, S Jones Conversions division has developed a range of specialist containerised storage solutions. These are designed to provide a safe and secure space for manufacturers to store and test their latest innovations and ensure the integrity of new battery designs – including via intensive cycle testing and abuse testing. Its team of engineers consulted representatives from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service as well as battery manufacturers to develop specialist solutions that will withstand the unique challenges posed by intense battery testing.
Earlier this year, S Jones Conversions joined calls for changes to battery manufacturing and testing certification in the UK following the announcement of proposed amendments to the Product Safety and Metrology Bill to reduce the risk posed by substandard batteries which haven’t been thoroughly tested and certified. The Fire Safety Event, which is dedicated to supporting industry professionals and organisations in improving and maintaining the highest standards in fire safety management, is the perfect platform to continue to raise awareness about the need to support manufacturers as they work to better understand how to harness the power of lithium-ion batteries.
More details of the event and speakers will be announced in the new year.
