MMS Electronics Ltd has available an exceptionally versatile line of DOG alphanumeric and graphic displays. The smallest display is the new 4×10 (line x char) EA DOGS104-A, high-contrast easy-to-read STN and FSTN display. The module size is only 36×27 with a viewing area 33x12mm.

With double height character option the display transforms into a 2×10 or 3×10 display. The DOG (Display-On-Glass) is also referred to as COG (Chip-On-Glass) where the control circuit mounts directly on the display glass. This technology is very reliable and reduces overall product cost.

The integrated SSD1803A controller offers 3/4-wire SPI and 2-wire I²C interfaces. Selection of 3 fonts: Cyrillic, English-Japanese and European. Supply voltage is +3.3V without the need for a negative voltage. A typical current of only 440µA (with LED backlight off) makes it ideal for battery powered, hand-held applications.

Display and optional backlights are “mix & match”; There are 3 display matrix variants available, FSTN black/white positive transflective and reflective and STN blue/white negative. For applications where a backlight is required there is a choice of 3 LED backlight colours: amber, dual yellow-green/red and a trio green/red/white. The dual and trio colour backlights are ideal for applications where a normal (green) or warning (red) status indication is required. Display height is 2.0 mm (without backlight) and 4.6 mm including the backlight.

In the same series there is the larger EA DOGM204. This display can be used as 2×20, 3×20 or 4×20 in double height character mode. Current requirement for the EA DOGM204 is only 250µA without use of the LED backlight. These displays could be battery powered making it ideal for handheld applications. The EA DOGM204 has an integrated SSD1803 controller with 4 bit, 8 bit, 4-wire SPI or 2-wire I²C interface. Display can be used in bottom or top view direction.

Selection of 3 different fonts: Cyrillic, English-Japanese and European. The displays with FSTN technology and white background can be read without a backlight. Display and backlights can be ordered separately to create 12 different combinations. For the EA DOGM204 display 3 different LED backlights are available: white, amber and a dual green/red. The dual colour backlight is ideal for applications where a green (normal) or red (warning) status indication is required.  The overall height is only 2mm and 5.8mm including an LED backlight. The displays are simply soldered directly into the PCB or socket. No screws, nuts, standoff or pin headers are required.

A simulator tool and USB test board EA 9780-3USB is available to help with development. Without any programming the DOG display is pictured on the Windows™ desktop. The 9780-3USB board is powered via USB.  Any text typed in the editor is displayed immediately on the display.  The EA 9780-3USB test board can be used with all alphanumeric and graphic DOG displays. When using a graphic display bitmaps are dragged into the simulator tool and shown on the display.

Fonts for these graphic displays are created with the EA USBSTICK-FONT software. This software generates Cyrillic, Greek and Arabic fonts and can import Windows™ fonts. The preview window shows the font and when the EA 9780-3USB board is connected the characters also appear on the DOG display. The software also generates header files to include in the source code.

For the alphanumeric, graphic and the EA ePA20 ePAPER display there are Arduino shields available.  All documentation to connect the DOG or ePAPER displays to an Arduino is made available. The documentation includes circuit diagrams, EAGLE PCB layouts, component placements and sample programs for operating the display on an Arduino Uno.

The alphanumeric displays can be supplied in EA DOGM081 (1×8), EA DOGM162 (2×16) and EA DOGM163 (3×16) Lines x Char. The graphic displays shields are available for the EA DOGS102 (102×64 pixels), EA DOGM132 (132×32), EA DOGM128, EA DOGL128 (128×64) and the EA ePA20 ePAPER (172×72 pixels).
