An AC Front End module for high, density, high efficiency AC to DC power conversion was released by Vicor Corporation.  The company’s new VI BRICK module is described as a complete AC–DC converter, operating over the universal AC input range of 85-264V. This is said to enable delivery of a fully isolated and PFC regulated 48V output. The device features a low profile package measuring 3.75 by 1.91 inches (95.3mm by 48.6mm) and 0.38 inches (9.55 mm) in height.

The device provides a power conversion density of 121W/in3 (7.5W/cm3) or 54W/in3 for a complete supply that includes all necessary components including hold-up capacitance.

Every electronic product or system that operates off of an AC utility line must incorporate an AC-DC front-end to convert the AC utility voltage into the smooth DC voltage required by electronic circuitry. As the ‘firewall’ between the utility and the customer’s electronics, a contemporary front-end must perform complex tasks – such as power factor correction and noise reduction – to meet the requirements of international regulatory agencies. Factors including, integrated rectification, filtering and transient protection enable configuration of a complete front end system.

A Double-Clamp ZVS high switching frequency topology is  said to be the enabler for consistently high efficiency, which is claimed to be up to 92 percent – across its entire AC input voltage range, including operation down to 85VAC. This is said to cut power losses by more than 50 percent compared to other similar devices on the market. The AC Front End also simplifies cooling requirements by reducing both the size and cost of cooling components.
