Excelera manufactures plug-and-play frequency and analog (capacitive / resistive) to digital signal converters (UFDC, UFDC16, USTI and USTI-EXT).
MMS Electronics Ltd, its UK distributor, presents a new low power product, the USTI-MOB. The Universal Sensors and Transducers Interface (USTI-MOB) is an integrated circuit with reduced power consumption, starting at 15 µA on active mode. This low consumption makes it very useful for always-on and battery powered applications. The new IC has the same functionalities and metrological performances (for frequency and period measurement) as the USTI IC.
The IC is available in four packages: 32-lead, 7×7 mm, Thin Profile Plastic Quad Flat Package (TQFP) and 32-pad, 5 x 5 mm, Quad Flat No-Lead/Micro Lead Frame Package (QFN/MLF) and a small 4 x 4 mm, QFN/MLF.
A Tool-box for Frequency and Time signals measurement
Measuring frequency, duty-cycle or PWM signals with a micro-controller has always been a challenging and time consuming task. In most cases it is very difficult to achieve a signal measurement as accurate as specified in the sensor specification; often reducing the quality of the sensor reading.
Excelera makes high-resolution conversion available to any sensor systems designer reducing time-to-market and development costs dramatically.
Based on novel patented methods Excelera products can measure frequency, period, pulse count, rpm rotation speed, frequency ratio, duty-cycle, frequency difference and phase-shift with a programmable accuracy of 1 to 0.0005%. The USTI can work in 29 measuring and one generating modes (UFDC in 16 measuring modes)
The error is constant across the whole input frequency from 0.05 Hz to 9 MHz or 144 MHz by using pre-scaling (7.5Mhz and 120MHz for UFDC-1).
The transducers have a serial, SPI and I²C interface and can be used in slave or master mode. In addition to measuring quasi-digital sensors the USTI can interface to resistive, including platinum (Pt), cuprum (Cu) resistors, thermistors (Ni), resistive bridges and capacitive sensing elements.
An extended temperature version USTI-EXT (-55 °C to + 150 °C) can be used directly in or near gearboxes, transfer cases, engines, turbochargers and exhaust systems.
Evaluation boards turned low-cost DAQ systems
The Evaluation Boards UFDC-1 and UFDC-1M-16 are available for 2 channel accurate frequency, rpm and other time-domain measurements. With this low cost evaluation boards it is possible to make high accuracy measurements equal to expensive bench top frequency meters. These boards have an RS-232 serial port for control of the UFDC. Simple commands are used to set resolution, conversion speed, modes and start/stop the measurement.
Applications
Temperature sensors, optical light to frequency sensors, quartz pressure transducers, Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors, strain-gauge to frequency converters, accelerometers, ABS brake systems, wheel speed sensor, turbine speed sensors, pressure sensors, fuel level sensors, mass air flow sensor, torque sensor, chemical, gas and biosensors
